Common Job Scam Tactics and Tips for Prevention

Job scams come in many forms, but they can generally be categorized into six main types. When you encounter any of these, it’s important to stay alert:

  1. Luring Victims into Underground Financial Investments
Underground forex trading companies often recruit for roles like accountants, data entry clerks, office assistants, or part-time staff. They entice fresh graduates by boasting about the high profits of forex trading. Newcomers see so-called “seniors” driving luxury cars and wearing designer clothes within months of joining, and are unknowingly pressured into trading forex, which earns hefty transaction fees for the scam group.

  2. Exploiting Dreams of Becoming a Model or Actor
Scammers target those who aspire to join the entertainment industry, requiring fees for rehearsals, training, photo shoots, and printing model cards. After paying large sums, victims find themselves without any job opportunities. By the time they realize it’s a scam, the fraudsters have already disappeared.

  3. Fake Job Training That Charges Tuition Fees
Some tutoring or training centers advertise with phrases like “government agency recruitment” or “hiring by a certain aviation association.” Once applicants arrive, they’re pressured into signing up for expensive courses worth tens of thousands, without knowing the quality of the teachers or whether the curriculum fits their needs. Later, if they try to request a refund, they often find the contract is heavily biased in favor of the training center, leaving them with little recourse.

  4. Pressuring Candidates to Buy Products
Some so-called tech companies post job ads claiming “university graduates welcome” and “great benefits,” especially targeting those without a science or engineering background. At the interview, the recruiter—often working in pairs—aggressively pitches “cutting-edge biotech products.” The interview turns into a brainwashing session lasting hours, until the applicant finally gives in and spends tens of thousands buying the products.

  5. Pyramid Schemes Recruiting New Members
These scams often advertise with phrases like “no experience needed” and “become a million-dollar sales elite,” attracting inexperienced job seekers. The nature of the job is kept vague during the interview. Only during training do they reveal that their main product is funeral pre-planning contracts or cemetery plots. Ironically, some ads even claim the company is planning to go public, luring hopeful candidates with promises of stock options.

  6. Collecting Personal IDs for Identity Theft
Some scams focus solely on stealing applicants’ personal information. They ask job seekers to fill out extensive forms, including questions about credit card or ATM card usage, and request copies of ID cards. Many inexperienced young people comply without suspicion, unknowingly providing everything scammers need to commit identity fraud.
