Departmental Student Support and Counseling System

Departmental Student Support and Counseling System

To foster a psychologically healthy environment for all students, the University appoints licensed counseling psychologists and social workers to serve as professional school counselors. These counselors act as liaisons for each college/department, working in collaboration with faculty advisors and military instructors to strengthen support systems, enhance emergency responses for high-risk students, and promote students’ mental well-being. The responsibilities of school counselors include:

  • Follow-up counseling for transfer students: For students with ongoing counseling needs upon admission, counselors provide follow-up care and assessment. Depending on the student’s condition, counselors may convene transition meetings or interdepartmental joint case conferences with relevant academic and administrative units to develop strategies that support adjustment to campus life.
  • Follow-up Counseling for High-Risk Students Identified in the mental health survey: Administer mental health surveys to all new undergraduate and graduate students (including transfer students). Identify high-risk students and arrange ongoing follow-up and case monitoring.
  • Follow-up Counseling for Crisis Cases: For high-risk or urgent cases, when psychological counseling is deemed necessary, counselors assist with referral into the individual counseling with a psychologist. For cases requiring continued case management, social workers assume ongoing case management and follow-up care. When needed, counselors organize interdepartmental joint case conferences to integrate resources and develop appropriate intervention strategies.
  • Support Services and Follow-up Care for High-Risk Cases: In the event of student suicide or accidental incident (e.g. death), the school counselors of department takes primary responsibility. Duties include coordinating follow-up resource connections and interventions, such as grief counseling, providing psychological support services for the department or related units, and identifying witnesses, survivors, or other high-risk students for subsequent follow-up care.
